Your Priorities Update 2024/25: What's Happening in the Gorbals Community?
It’s been a few months since you voted to fund seven exciting ideas from local people, and we’re thrilled to update you on the progress so far! While developing, designing, and delivering new projects takes time, we’re working hard to ensure these ideas benefit from both community insight and the support needed to make them successful and sustainable.
Here’s a quick overview of what’s happening with the projects you voted to fund:
Gorbals Community Pantry
The Gorbals Community Pantry is quickly becoming a reality! A passionate group of local people has been working together to make this vision come to life. We’ve been looking at existing community resources and how other pantries operate to ensure ours complements and strengthens the wider food network in the Gorbals. The shop fit-out is nearly complete, and we’re excited to announce that the pantry will open in early spring 2025. We’re calling on anyone interested in helping make the pantry a success to get involved, ensuring it thrives for years to come.
Gorbals Community Football
The Gorbals Community Football project has made great strides, with a small Management Committee now in place. This committee is laying the groundwork to offer fun, accessible football sessions for children and young people in the Gorbals, ensuring that affordability is never a barrier.
Gorbals Art Group
After two successful sessions in 2023, the Gorbals Art Group is being revitalized and will soon be coming to a venue near you. No experience is necessary—whether you’re an experienced artist or a complete beginner, there’s a place for you! With four local people involved in making this a reality, discussions are ongoing to bring more sessions to the community.
Sanctuary Gardens & Growing Spaces
We helped set up a pilot project over in Riverside, and we’re now asking the community to share their thoughts on where the next growing spaces should go. There are also ongoing discussions about creating sanctuary spaces for relaxation and connection. If you're interested in transforming vacant areas into thriving outdoor spaces, we'd love to hear your ideas! Drop us an email at info@gorbalsideas.org.uk.
Community Cinema
We’re currently researching the possibility of setting up a community cinema. It’s still in the planning stages, but the idea has sparked a lot of interest, and we’re exploring how best to bring this cultural offering to the Gorbals community.
Repair Cafe
The NGHA maintenance team are happy to help get involved to get this project off the ground and bring a Repair Café to the Gorbals. We hope the Repair Café will offer a space where people can bring broken items to be fixed, encouraging sustainability and helping to reduce waste in the community.
Gorbals Community Facility
There’s a lot going on, and we’re excited about the progress that’s being made! But we can’t do it alone—if you’re interested in getting involved or have ideas to share, we’d love to hear from you. Whether it’s helping to develop one of these projects or contributing to a new initiative, your involvement can make a real difference.
If you’d like to help design, develop, or deliver any of these ideas, please reach out via email or call Melissa on 0141 429 3900. Together, we can build a stronger, more connected Gorbals community!
