Gorbals Community Pantry

Over 300 people voted to support the Gorbals Community Pantry, a great idea brought to us by long-time Gorbals resident and Poverty Truth Community Campaigner, Cath Wallace.

There was £8,000 of funding supporting this idea, however upon further research, the outcome highlighted that £8000 was not enough to get the Pantry off the ground. However, we are delighted to be supporting Cath to make in making access to affordable food and the Gorbals Community Pantry a reality for 2025.

Community Pantries offer a vital service by providing access to low-cost produce, a resource that has never been more important, especially given the current cost of living crisis. They also play a key role in reducing food waste, benefiting both people's finances and the environment.

The initial £8,000  funding has been instrumental in purchasing essential equipment, such as refrigeration units, as well as initial stock for the pantry. However, this project wouldn’t have been possible without the additional support from the maintenance team at the NGHA, who’ve provided invaluable assistance in getting the space ready, as well as the generous donations from local partner contractors who have helped bring the pantry to life.

For the pantry to run successfully, we rely on a team of committed volunteers to help with everything from picking up supplies and stocking shelves to serving customers and managing finances. A dedicated Management Committee of local people is already working hard to get the pantry up and running.

The opening date is set for late 2025—watch this space for more updates!

If you’d like to get involved as a volunteer or join the Steering group, drop us an email at info@gorbalsideas.org.uk.

Your support will help make this project a success and bring affordable food to the community
